Here to answer questions!

We know starting something new can bring up lots of questions, and you’re not alone! This page is here to give you quick answers to the most common things students ask us. If you don’t see your question here, just reach out—we’re always happy to help.

I have a great idea for a new course! What do I do? Who do I tell?

We love hearing ideas from our community. If you think of a class that would benefit learners, or if you’re interested in teaching a course yourself, let us know! You can call the office, send us an email, or visit us in person to share your suggestion. We review all course ideas to see how they fit with student needs, instructor availability, and community demand. Many of our most popular classes started with suggestions from students just like you.

How do I pay for my classes?

We try to make payment as straightforward and flexible as possible:

  • Register online: Some courses allow for online registration, and you can pay securely with MasterCard, Visa, or American Express.
  • Register by phone: Call our office to sign up. Payments can be made by card, check, or money order, which must reach us by the course start date.
  • Register in person: Visit our office or program locations to register and pay by personal check, money order, cash, or card.

If you need financial help, ask us about scholarships or funding opportunities—many of our students qualify for assistance.

How will I know if a class is full?

If you register in person or by phone, staff will let you know right away whether there’s still space available. If you register online, the course listing will display “Course Full” once all seats are taken. At that point, you’ll have the option to join the waiting list. If a spot opens up, we’ll contact you as soon as possible.

Do I have to live in your program’s school district to take classes?

Not at all!

Spruce Mountain Adult Education serves learners from across the state of Maine. Any Maine resident can register for classes at our location. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds and towns, and we’re proud to be part of a statewide adult education network.

How do I register for a class?

You can browse our website and register directly there, or call our office at (207) 897-6406 if you prefer to sign up by phone. If you’d like to discuss your options before registering, our staff is happy to guide you toward the class that best suits your needs and goals.

Do classes cost money?

Many of our classes are free, especially those focused on academic skills, high school completion, or career preparation.

Some workforce training programs—such as medical assistant or CDL training—have associated costs. However, funding may be available through scholarships, state programs, or partnerships with organizations like EMDC and HOPE.

If cost is a concern, please ask us about your options—we don’t want finances to stand in the way of your education.

Can someone just enroll in a college preparation class?

YES!

College prep classes are open to anyone looking to strengthen their skills before entering college. Whether you’re returning to school after years away, preparing for placement tests, or want to feel more confident, you can sign up. Instructors will work with you to create a personalized learning plan tailored to your specific goals.

How do I access my online class?

Most of our online classes are through Essential Education and Imagine Edgenuity. Once you’re registered, your instructor will send you login instructions. If you misplace the link, you can always return to our Classwork page on the website. If you run into trouble, reach out—we’re here to help get you connected.

What if I miss a class?

Life happens, and we understand. If you know you’ll miss a class, please let your instructor know ahead of time when possible. They can provide guidance on how to make up missed work or keep up with lessons. The important thing is to stay in touch so we can support your progress.
